"Anything from bandages through drugs, surgical instruments, all the necessities toassist people who have the sorts of trauma that we have seen on television in the aftermathof the battle for Baghdad," he said.

General Cosgrove acknowledged it would be difficult to distribute the supplies amidanarchy and looting in Baghdad, but said United States troops already in the capital wouldprovide backup.

"Whatever it takes, they will get there," he said.

He said there were enough Iraqi and coalition doctors in the capital but the main shortagewas medical supplies.

"All Australians have been touched by the plight of the people of Iraq, particularlythe residents of Baghdad, over the last few days," General Cosgrove said.

"There is a need for a quick response to avert a significant humanitarian problem."

Doctors said the medical supplies would be welcome but called for a proper assessmentof civilian damage to Iraq to gauge the state of the crisis and the most immediate needs.

"As well as the issue of medical supplies we also need to address the security of hospitalsand hospital staff, and restoring clean water and power," Medical Association for thePrevention of War Australian president Sue Wareham said.

"Planeloads of supplies, while welcome, are not sufficient to ensure good health carefor the people of Iraq."

Dr Wareham said Australia had an essential role to play in the rebuilding of Iraq.
