Sharing memories with mates over a schooner or two is just as important to those whofought for our country.
In Sydney, hundreds of people gathered at one of the city's most popular watering holesto catch up with old friends.
Some Vietnam veterans shared a drink with their adult children.
Tony Lowe, 55, a retired professional soldier who served 12 months in Vietnam, downedhis first beer shortly after 6am (AEST) today.
"I started about 6 o'clock, I'm going to meet up with some old mates, have a marchand then have a few beers," Mr Lowe said over a drink at the Grand Hotel in Hunter Street.
"Today is a day when we get together and we think about the prior era which we usedto attend before we went to Vietnam."
One young soldier, who asked not to be identified, popped in for a quick beer beforejoining the Anzac Day march through the city.
"I suppose there is a lot of memories involved, a lot of history here," he said.
"From here I'm going to march and then go back to the barracks for a few drinks."
