Qld: Girls outrank boys in OP scores

Girls have outperformed boys in 19 of the top 20 Overall Position scores for Queensland
students this year.

But boys have narrowly beaten girls 301 to 298 in the number of students taking out
an OP 1 - the highest possible score in the position system.

The system represents students' overall achievement in their last two years of school study.

Releasing the figures in Brisbane today, Education Minister DEAN WELLS said schools
are working to address the negative culture which discourages high academic performance
by boys.

Mr WELLS said one way schools can show faith in boys is by appointing both a boys'
and a girls' school captain.

Boys' education conferences will be held in Townsville and Brisbane early next year
to give teachers and principals practical advice.
