NSW: Crime rates up in New South Wales - Audit

Crime levels in New South Wales have soared above the national average.

The state has topped the crime table for armed and unarmed robberies -- reaching an
all-time high last financial year.

The greatest increase is for sexual assault -- with New South Wales recording the fourth
highest rate in the nation.

A New South Wales audit office report says all rates of reported crime against people
last year were well above the national average.

But the report says the number of police in New South Wales is below the national average
per head of population.

State Opposition leader KERRY CHIKAROVSKI says the report vindicates the opposition's
concern about the police resources.
